Shane Porter - Biography
GradCertMgt, MBA, FIML
I left school at the age of seventeen and became an apprentice painter and decorator. My parents were not academically inclined, but nevertheless, they were smart, and they were hard workers. So, the emphasis was on getting a job after leaving school. It obviously worked for them, because they owned the house we lived in, and they were in the same jobs forever. Growing up, I don't ever recall going without.
I don't think there was ever a discussion or encouragement from my parents about going to university or furthering my education. It was mostly about getting a job and working hard. That ethos has remained with me. I do work hard, I enjoy working, and I like a challenge. But I also know how to relax and turn off.
I got married at the age of twenty-two, and I'm still happily married to Deborah after all these years. We have five adult children and ten grandchildren (at the last count, anyway.)
I did eventually get to university. While the children were still young, I was working full-time and studying accounting and information technology part-time. It became increasingly difficult to maintain part-time studies and work while raising a young family, so I withdraw in the third year to focus on my family responsibilities. The knowledge I gained, though, was invaluable, and served me well throughout the years. But not completing my studies ate away at me, so when the kids were off our hands, and the business well-established, I finally got it done.
With my business partner, I own Summer Technology, an IT Managed Services and ERP Deployment company. We employ a team of fifteen consultants and technicians. I also run Porter Leadership Centre, providing DISC Assessments, leadership workshops, and business coaching.
